The Challacombe Ashes 2007

Despite a summer that many of us would probably rather forget, the annual Challacombe Ashes match was favoured with superb conditions and a record-breaking amount raised for the Children's Hospice South West. We even managed to get a cut of haylage off the outfield before the match! Attempts to steal all the best players and thereby reclaim the Ashes to their rightful owner were thwarted;once again the all-conquering Rest of the World team managed to take the urn for another year running, with an all-round performance.

But the strongest performance of the day came after the match, when the auction of raffle prizes took place. A 'live' watercolour of the event painted by a local artist fetched three figures, along with the proceeds from a host of other prizes donated by local businesses. The total amassed through cream teas, hog roast, raffle and general cajoling of people to open their wallets and purses raised £1505.90. The Challacombe Community Association received £200 for their support in putting the event on,with the balance £1305.90 donated to the Children's Hospital South West.
